.:: The Game

Floorball is a sport that is gaining popularity in America. Floorball is already incredibly popular in other countries, mainly northern Europe. Although the common name here in the states is Floorball, it also refered to as Innebandy, Salibandy or Unihockey. While it is very similar to ice or roller hockey, it is played without skates, it is less physical, usually played on an indoor court and with more focus on ball handling skills. Like ice hockey, the game is played with 5 field players and a goalie. Unlike ice hockey, the goalie does not use a stick or glove and is able to throw (never kick) the ball from within his goalie area (much like a soccer goalie).

As I mentioned before, the game is less physical than ice or roller hockey, but that does not mean it is without contact. Many times players will fight shoulder to shoulder while chasing a loose ball in the corner, or fighting for positioning (much like you would see in soccer or basketball). There is however an emphasis on safety which makes it an excellent sport for people of all ages. The rules call for the players stick never to rise above the waist when preparing for a shot, or above the knee when following through the forward motion of a shot. A more detailed explanation for the rules can be found at the Internation Floorball Federation web site.

Another reason why this sport is growing in popularity is the relatively low cost associated with the equipment needed play. Although some sticks may cost as much as $150.00, any player can generally start playing Floorball right away with a entry level stick for around $40.00 and a pair of tennis shoes. Nothing else is required except for some patience and enthusiasm. The balls are also inexpensive as they are similar to a wiffle ball. In fact, the Floorball ball looks identical to a baseball wiffle ball, with some minor differences in hole design and weight (it's just a little bit heavier).
